Vikings pull away from Jills in final quarter

Northland scores 21 in the second quarter

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northland College Women's Basketball team kept close to Bethany Lutheran College for a majority of the game but fell 47-81 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Friday night in New Ulm, Minn. The LumberJills had their best quarter of the season scoring 21 points before the half.
 
The Jills and Vikings were scoreless for nearly the first two minutes. Madi Owens started the scoring with a two-point jump shot assisted by Katelyn Altaha. BLC scored four after but Madison Mendoza answered with a layup to stop the early run. After the first quarter, the Vikings were up 15-5.
 
The LumberJills had their best quarter of the season in the second frame. It started with Altaha knocking down a pair of free throws. Tara Sandoval got on the scorer's sheet with a layup and then converted on the three-point play. In the following possession, Kodie Rempp added two more. In the final two minutes, Rempp made the first three-pointer for the Jills. As time was expiring Sandoval connected on the deep ball to give Northland 21 in the quarter.
 
In the first six minutes of the third quarter, Northland was held without a basket but in the final four minutes, they scored 13, with Sandoval scoring six.
 
In the final quarter, the Vikings exploded with 28 to pull away from the Jills to win 81-47. Northland had eight points in the final 10 minutes with Altaha scoring four, Mendoza adding three and Sandoval chipping in one.
 
Sandoval led the scoring with 15 points and Altaha with right behind here with 14. Rempp was third on the team with eight. Mendoza and Owens also added to the scoring with six and four points respectively. Altaha led the team with four assists.
 
Northland grabbed 27 rebounds in the contest. Rempp had a team-high seven with Sandoval behind her with six. Altaha had four steals to pace the team and Mendoza had three to finish second for NC. The LumberJills blocked four shots with Rempp swatting two and Altaha and Owens blocking one.
 
The Jills end the season tomorrow (Saturday) with a road game against Martin Luther College.
