ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team was defeated 3-1 by Lawrence University Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Wis. Freshman
Kylie Schryer scored her first collegiate goal with 33 seconds remaining in the game.
Freshman goaltender
Maddy Bliss was tested early making four saves in a span of four minutes. Junior
Kyleigh Moffatt had the first shot for the Jills just over five minutes in. Northland had to fight off a power play eight minutes in. The Jills held the Vikings to three shots and Bliss turned them all away. At the end of the period the game remained scoreless.
After a late penalty on LU the Jills started the second period on the power play.
Julia Fussy,
Tate Hutchinson, and
Kiera Fairnington all had shots with the extra skater but were unable to get one past the goalie. The Vikings scored the opening goal four minutes in and three minutes later they doubled their lead with a short-handed goal. The Jills outshot the Vikings 16-to-8 but still remained scoreless through 40 minutes.
Northland continued to have chances in the third but was still held out. The Vikings scored their final goal of the game with five minutes remaining. With less than two minutes remaining the Vikings were called for their fourth penalty of the game. As time was narrowing down Schryer took a shot that bounced just right to score for her first collegiate goal to end the game with a 3-1 score.
Schryer recorded her first collegiate point on her first on the goal in the third period. Northland totaled a season-high 29 shots with Hutchinson pacing the team with six. Six student-athletes ended the game with three shots: Fussy, Fairnington, Moffatt, Schryer,
Kennedy Gruhlke, and
Karsen Nicksic. In goal, Bliss made 28 saves.
The LumberJills play their final game of 2024 next week when they travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a 1 puck drop.
