Northland falls in three to UW-Superior

ASHLAND, Wis.– The Northland College Volleyball team was defeated 0-3 (8-25, 17-25, 14-25) by the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Tuesday night in Ashland, Wis.
 
The Yellowjackets started the match with a 9-2 lead. Northland rallied scoring on back-to-back points with Leah Allan scoring off the serve. UW-Superior continued to string together runs and took the first set 25-8.
 
To start set two UWS scored the first three points. Ellison DeZwarte scored off an assist from Kodie Rempp to break up the run. Northland would close the cap one with DeZwarte connecting on another attack. For the remainder of the set UW-Superior would go on a run and Northland would answer back but couldn't get level, resulting in a 25-17 win for the Yellowjackets.
 
After trailing 5-2, the LumberJills scored the following six points to take their largest lead of the match. In the rally Kennedy Gruhlke recorded two kills and Britta Josephson and Lily Zapp had one. The Yellowjackets closed the gap then points continued to trade until it was tied 11-11. UW-Superior would close out the set on a 14-to-4 run winning the final set 25-14.
 
Josephson led the attack with six kills, Gruhlke was one behind with five and Allan rounded out the top three with four. DeZwarte tallied three and Zapp had two and had a hitting percentage of .667 from her three attacks. Allan had the team's sole service ace. Rempp assisted on 17 points, and Gruhlke and Hannah Fisher ended the match with one assist.
 
Defensively, Allan totaled a team-high 12 digs with Gruhlke one behind with 11. The Jills had two blocks in the match, one solo from Josephson and an assisted block by Allan and DeZwarte.
 
Northland continues its homestand on Friday when they host North Central University at 7 p.m.
