Northland drops a pair of nonconference matches

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Volleyball team was defeated 3-0 (23-25, 8-25, and 18-25) by Lawrence University and 3-0 (22-25, 20-25, and 12-25) by the College of St. Scholastica in a tri-match in Ashland, Wis., Saturday afternoon.
 
In the opening set against the Vikings, the opening points were traded. The LumberJills took at early 9-6 lead with Leah Allan scoring on three attacks. Points continued to be traded until Lawrence went on a 7-to-1 rally to take their largest lead at three. Northland answered back with a three-point run with kills coming from Allan and Ellison DeZwarte. Northland continued to stay in the match but fell just short 25-23.
 
The second set did not go Northland's way after trailing early the Jills could not make up ground and fell 25-8. Britta Josephson had two kills and Allan had one in the set. The third set was pretty even. The Vikings went up 5-2 early and Northland kept with them getting back to a one-point deficit but could not level the set and dropped the final set 18-25.
 
Allan led the attack with 12 kills and Josephson was not far behind with 10. Kennedy Gruhlke and DeZwarte had the other five kills for Northland at three and two respectively. Kodie Rempp assisted on 24 points, the most this season. Dezwarte had two assisted blocks in the match with Allan and Rempp assisting her. Allan and Hannah Peel tallied 10 digs, pacing Northland. Josephson finished one behind at a nine and Rempp totaled seven.
 
After trailing by three in the opening set against the Saints, Northland went on a seven-point run capped off with a service ace from Hannah Fisher. The lead was short-lived as CSS scored seven points in a row soon after to go up 16-14. Northland kept is close for the remainder of the set but fell just short at 22-25.
 
Northland started the second set hot with a 5-to-1 rally with Gruhlke and DeZwarte scoring for the Jills early. The lead traded hands a few times with Northland regaining a four-point lead after scoring five in a row. The lead would change hands one more time at 13-12 and the Saints would take set two 25-20.
 
In the final set CSS took an early lead and it proved too much for Northland to overcome as they would take the match 25-12.
 
Allan led the offense with eight kills with Josephson right behind her with seven. Rempp, DeZwarte, and Gruhlke all recorded two in the match and Lily Zapp had one. Rempp assisted on 19 points and Gruhlke and Peel had one assist. The Jills totaled three service aces from Allan, Josephson, and Fisher. Allan, Josephson, and Gruhlke all reached double figures digs at 13, 12, and 10 respectively.
 
Northland continues its home stand as they host the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
