Jills top Rams 3-1 with a dominant performance

Northland wins first home match

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Volleyball team won its first home match of the season, topping North Central University 3-1 (14-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-11) in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action, Friday night in Ashland, Wis. The Jills had their best hitting performance of the season converting on 28.3% of their attacks.  
 
After a slow first set, the Jills turned it on against the Rams to claim the match in the fourth set. Northland was down early 5-1 to start the second set but roared ahead with a seven-point run. After taking the lead the Jills held the Rams and extended their lead to nine at 17-8 and won their first set off a kill from Bailey Wynn. In the third set, Northland went on a crazy 11-point scoring run that put them up 15-2. In the run, Wynn tallied four kills. The Jills put themselves in a great position to take the third set and won 25-12 off a Madi Owen ace. In the final set, the Jills pulled together two five-point runs and four points in a row to go up 14-6 early. Northland never looked back winning 25-11 with a Britta Josephson kill to claim the match.
 
Along with their best hitting percentage in a match, the Jills had their best set of the season hitting .441. Three student-athletes reached double-digit kills in the match in Wynn, Elizabeth Montgomery and Josephson. Wynn led the team with 13 hits hitting .310. On four attacks Alexa Zadra scored two points helping the team's hitting percentage. Off the serve, the Jills recorded nine aces and had a season-low of only two service errors. Annika Herlevi had a season-high three service aces to lead both teams. The two-time UMAC Setter of the Week Megan Van Gheem set up 37 points, the third time this season.
 
Defensively, Zadra and Wynn both totaled over 10 digs at 14 and 12 respectively. At the net the Jills recorded three blocks, coming from Montgomery with two and Shelby Justman with one.
 
The Jills host number four University of Northwestern tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 p.m., at the Kendrigan Center.
