No. 4 Eagles top LumberJills in three sets

Northland falls to 2-3 in UMAC play

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Volleyball team battled with the fourth-ranked University of Northwestern, on Saturday afternoon, falling 0-3 (9-25, 17-25, 12-25) in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference in Ashland, Wis. Leading the LumberJills' offense was freshman Britta Josephson with seven kills.  
 
The Jills had their best set in the first set, hitting .214. In the first set, three of the seven kills came from Elizabeth Montgomery. The Eagles converted on 42.4% of their attacks in the first set. Northland kept the second closer. After tailing 8-1 to start the set the Jills climbed back within four. Alexa Zadra made the score 13-9 after a service ace. Northwestern started to pull away and went up 2-0 in the match. The final set, Northland had its biggest lead of the match. The Jills went up 6-2 early with Josephson recording two points. A nine-point run put UNW up 11-6. The five-point lead was too much for the Jills to overcome and fell 12-25 in the final set.
 
Josephson led the Jills in kills for the second time this season. Josephson tallied seven kills in the loss with Montgomery behind her with three. Megan Van Gheem set up 13 points in the match with zero set errors. From the serve, Shelby Justman scored two of the Jills' four service aces. Also recording an ace in the match was Bailey Wynn and Zadra.
 
The defense was led by Van Gheem and Zadra both tallying nine digs. Wynn recorded Northland's sole block with a solo block in the second set.
 
The Jills travel to New Ulm, Minn., for their next match on Tuesday as they take on Martin Luther College at 7 p.m.
