MAUSTON, Wis.--- The Northland College Baseball team traveled to Mauston, WI for a UMAC double header vs. North Central MN this afternoon at the Woodside Sports Complex. The LumberJacks won both games by scores of 13-3 and 9-4 and are now 5-2 in their last seven games.
Game 1
In the bottom of the first,
Caden Willis drew a bases loaded walk, scoring
Tyler Murphy and
Hunter Wicklund hit a sac fly, scoring
Zach Ross to give the Jacks the early 2-0 lead. In the second, the DH
Anthony Boyle hit an rbi single, scoring
Andy Linder to extend the LumberJacks lead to 3-0. North Central tied the game 3-3 in the top of the third inning but the game wouldn't be tied for long as
Ridge Guyette doubled to left center, scoring
Keaton Arreazola. Guyette later scored off of a wild pitch to make it 5-3 in favor of the Jacks. The LumberJacks exploded for five runs in the 7th as Boyle hit a ground rule double to make it 7-3. Later in the inning, Murphy hammered his first collegiate home run (3 rbi) down the left field line to make it 10-3. The Jacks added three more runs in the bottom of the 8th to ten run rule North Central, winning 13-3.
Andrew Birko had a stellar day on the mound for the Jacks going 6.0 innings, giving up three runs off of five hits, while striking out seven batters.
Claudio Aguilar pitched two perfect innings in relief, giving up 0 runs off of 3 hits and struck out two batters.
Wicklund went a perfect 4-4 at the plate in game one, scoring two runs.
Game 2
After a scoreless two innings,
Zach Ross was able to get the Jacks on the board, hitting a sac fly, scoring
Tyler Murphy to make it 1-0. The game remained tied in the bottom of the 6th inning before the LumberJack bats came alive, scoring 4 runs as
Matt Simpson hit a 2 rbi single to right center making it 3-0. Later in the inning, Wicklund was able to read the pitcher from North Central and was able to steal home, making it 4-0. The Jacks made it 5-0 as Murphy hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Simpson. North Central wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring 4 runs in the top of the 7th to make it 5-4 but the LumberJack bats continued to stay hot, as Wicklund hit an rbi double in the 7th, Arreazola hit a rbi double in the 8th and
Zach Ross capped off the game with a 2 rbi homer to right field as the Jacks would take game two 9-4 over North Central.
Anthony Boyle picked up the win in game two going 6.2 innings, giving up 1 earned run while striking out 8 batters.
Vinny Troccoli picked up the save, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up 1 run and struck out 4 batters.
Both Wicklund and Simpson led the LumberJacks at the plate in game two going 2-4.
The Jacks will have a quick turn around as they travel back down to Mauston, WI tomorrow (April 3rd) for a non-conference double header against Maranatha Baptist. Game 1 is set to start at 1pm.
