LumberJacks Win Shootout Against #10 UW-Stevens Point

Northland Men's Hockey stunned #10 UW-Stevens Point on Friday night when they scored the tying goal with :16 seconds left in regulation. The LumberJacks would eventually force a shootout with the Pointers. Luke Hartge and Conor Taylor each scored their shootout attempt to help the Jacks win the shootout and pick up a bonus point in WIAC standings.

The Northland College Men's Hockey team was back on the road on Friday evening to begin a two-game weekend series at UW-Stevens Point, the number #10 team in this week's USCHO D3 poll. After a well fought first two periods the LumberJacks scored two goals in the third to force overtime. Neither team was able to earn the victory in overtime, setting up the shootout. Although the shootout is only played for a bonus point in the standings, the Jacks were able to outscore the Pointers 2-1.

The Pointers took the early lead in the first with a goal at the 11:56 mark. The two teams played a scoreless second period, setting up a dramatic conclusion for the third. Brock Weimer got Northland on the board less than two minutes into the period on an assist from Taylor Ewing. For Weimer, the freshman's fifth goal of the season tied him for the team high and moved him into the team lead with 12 points. The Pointers answered back four minutes later to retake the lead. Josh King provided the late-game heroics for Northland. King scored his fourth goal of the season with just :16 seconds left in the game. Max Collette and Ben Varga each picked up an assist on the play. 

For the game, Northland was outshoot by the Pointers 35-16. Junior Chris Curr, who started in net for the Jacks, recorded 33 saves on the night, including six in overtime to help the LumberJacks snap the nine-game skid. 

Northland (1-19-2, 1-10-1 WIAC) will wrap up the season series with the Pointers on Saturday night. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM.
