APPLETON, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team answers back after a loss to Lawrence University with a 2-1 victory to split the series Sunday afternoon in Appleton, Wis. With the win the LumberJills match their win total from the 2022-23, in only the first half of the season.
Northland started the game with three quick shots from
Jamie Steinmetz,
Joey Schemenauer and
Taylor Richmond. The Vikings responded with a few shots of their own with
Daphne Gray blocking one and
Karlee Lehner saving the rest. On the first powerplay of the game the Jills go up 1-0 with a goal from
Maddy Bloedel. Northland recorded 14 shots in the first period and held the Vikings to seven.
Lawrence was on the powerplay 90 seconds into the second period. The Vikings only had one shot on goal that was saved and two shots blocked by
Nevaeh Trihey and
Kate Holtz. Four minutes later, LU had another powerplay ending with the same result.
Sydney Kanstrup doubled the Jills lead with her first goal of the season. In the final five minutes, the Vikings got on the board with a goal to bring the game within one.
In the final period, both teams had their chances, combining for 20 shots on goal but both goal tenders did their part to result in a scoreless final period.
The Jills tallied their second-most amount of shots this season with 31, one behind their season-high against the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Richmond and Bloedel led the team in shots with five, Richmond recorded at least one shot in each period and Bloedel started the game with three shots in the first period. Richmond, Bloedel and
Hannah Baumann all played a part in a goal recording an assist in the game.
Northland adds to its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Conference lead in blocked shots by totaling nine in the win. Gray blocked three shots to bring her season total to 18, second in the conference. Lehner earned her second win of the season to improve to 2-2-1 in her freshman campaign. Lehner made 25 saves in the win.
The LumberJills return to Ashland, Wis., and to WIAC play as they host the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a 2 p.m., start time.
