Northland earns first conference points

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team earned its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference points since Feb 9th, 2020 by tying the University of Wisconsin-Superior 2-2 and then added another point with a 1-0 shootout victory, Friday night in Ashland, Wis.

In the first period, the Jills and Yellowjackets had their changes resulting in nine and 12 shots respectively. Neither team could crack the deadlock and ended the first period knotted up at zero.

After no penalties in the first period, the Yellowjackets were on the powerplay four minutes in the second period after a tripping call and UWS recorded one shot. Shortly after the Jills had the man advantage, Cora Coz scored a short-handed goal to get on the board of UW-Superior. A minute later Kaylin Garner got the puck at the back line and scored on the one-on-one to bring the advantage to two.

Maddy Bloedel sent a shot to the goal that defected off the goalie to find Lauren Klein who scored on the opportunity to bring the game within one with five minutes left in the second period.

The third period was the best for the Jills with them recording more shots than UWS 11 to nine and continued to have the edge over them in faceoffs. At the 11:20 mark in the third period, senior Kiera Richards scored her second career goal to bring the Jills level at 2-2. Neither team found the go-ahead goal resulting in Northland's first overtime game in over a year.

UW-Superior recorded nine shots in the five-minute stretch but freshman goaltender Karlee Lehner stopped all of them to bring the game to a shootout. Lehner saw three shots during the shootout and turned away all three. Senior Taylor Richmond scored the only goal in the shootout to earn Northland an extra conference point.

In the game, Northland totaled a season-high 32 shots. Audrey Ellerington and Bloedel paced Northland at six shots and Kate Holtz was behind the pair with four. Klein scored her first goal of the season and the third of her career. Assisting on the goal was Bloedel and Ellerington. Kierra Richards scored her first goal of the season with Ellerinton picking up her second assist of the night.

The Jills return to the rink next week as they host Concordia College, Moorhead for a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday.
