ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Men's Hockey team was defeated 5-3 by (RV) Augsburg University Saturday night at the Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland, Wis. After going down 3-0 in the first period the Jacks fought back to make it a one-goal game but were unable to find the equalizer.
The first period was controlled by the Auggies outshooting Northland 19-5 and scoring three goals to take a big lead into the first intermission. Augsburg looked like they were going to run away with the game scoring its fourth goal on a power-play a minute into the second period. Within the next minute Camille Maroux landed Northland on the scorer's sheet with a power-play goal. The Jacks were not done there,
Bryson Cecconi made it a two-goal game seven minutes later getting assisted by
Ben Stewart and Marcoux. The third period was quiet for the majority until
Jackson Breton scored with five minutes left for Northland third goal in a row. In the final two minutes down only one the Jacks pulled their goalie for an extra skater but the Auggies took advantage and scored on the empty net to win 5-3.
After a slow start on offense, the LumberJacks finished with 28 shots after only recording five in the first period. Freshman Stewart led Northland with five shots in the game with three coming in the second period. Behind him was Cecconi with four shots.
Zach Ross Eric Honold, Marcoux and Cecconi all assisted on one goal while Steward finished the game with two assists.
Viktor Wennberg kept the Jacks in the game making 40 saves.
The Jacks will be back at the Bay Area Civic Center next week when they host the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season.
