Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vancauteren scores the winning goal in the 14th minute over the Knights

Jacks return to the win column

NEW ULM, Minn.– The Northland College Men's Soccer team retains its third-place ranking in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference with a 2-0 victory over Martin Luther College Saturday afternoon in New Ulm, Minn. Victor Vancauteren scored the winning goal in the 14th minute to lift the Jacks over the Knights

Northland started fast testing the freshman keeper Zachary Pausma from the jump. In the first four minutes of action, Keagan Culbertson had two shots on frame. In the 14th minute, Vancauteren hit a low driven ball at the goal that went under the keeper's foot for the Jacks to take a 1-0 lead. Both teams then traded off shots for the rest of the half but were unable to find the back of the net, entering halftime 1-0 in favor of Northland.

In the second half, Jamie Colvill saw a handful of shots his way, saving the one shot that was on frame in the first few minutes. Colvill off a free kick sent the ball to the top of the box with a lot of traffic. Diego Castaneda took control of the ball and dropped it to Quinn Bieber who took a shot and improved the Northland lead to two. The Jacks had a great opportunity to make it 3-0 with a penalty for Harrison Tibbetts but, Pausma guessed the right way saving the shot.

Northland had its most shots in the last six games at 14 and its most shots on goal since the home opener with 13. Culbertson led the team with four shots in the match all being on target. Tibbets was right behind him with three. Coming off the bench Jeffrey Olson and Ezra Walt each added to the team's shot total. The goal scorers Vancauteren and Bieber only needed one shot to score in the match.

In goal, Covill recorded four saves and recorded his third shutout.

The Jacks play in their third straight road game Wednesday as they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on North Central University at 3:30 p.m.
