Yellowjackets win in three sets over LumberJills

Northland falls in three sets on the road

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Northland College Volleyball team fell in three sets (18-25, 24-26, 21-25) to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Tuesday night in Superior, Wis., in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play. Fifth-year student Bailey Wynn led the Jills with nine kills and 14 digs.
 
The match did not start in favor of the LumberJills with the Yellowjackets scoring the first five points of the first set. Northland knotted the game up at seven on a five-point run capped off by a kill from Wynn. Shortly after UWS went off an eight-point run to go up 20-11 and later won the set 25-18.
 
Set two was much closer with the teams trading points for most of the set. Northland took its first lead of the match off a bad set from UWS to go up 16-15. Both teams strung together some points that led to the Jills having a two-point lead at 21-19. Northland was a point away from taking the set at 24-21 but was unable to do so with UWS scoring the next five points to go up 2-0 in the match.
 
In the third set, the Yellowjackets had the momentum early leading to a big lead. The Jills started to chip away at the lead with two kills from Wynn and two errors from the UW-Superior making the score 17-20. That was the closest Northland was able to get falling 25-21.
 
Northland recorded 29 kills through the three sets. Wynn scored on nine of her 35 attacks with a hitting percentage of .114. Elizabeth Montgomery had the best hitting percentage on the team at .385, with seven kills. Shelby Justman rounded out the top three on the attack with five kills. Kodie Rempp led the team with 16 assists and Megan Van Gheem was behind her at 11. The LumberJills had four service aces with Annika Herlevi tallying two.
 
Three student-athletes recorded double-digit digs with Wynn leading the team with 14. Alexa Zadra was behind her at 13 and Herlevi totaled 10 in the match. At the net Montgomery blocked one attack, the only block for the Jills in the match.
 
The Jills take place in a UMAC doubleheader on Saturday, starting with North Central University at 1 p.m., followed by No. 4 University of Northwestern at 5 p.m.
