Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Haverkampf Goal Secures LumberJills First Win

Northland College Women's Soccer secured their first win of the season in the home opener against Lakeland University. Izzy Haverkampf tallied the lone goal in the contest to defeat the visiting Muskies 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Northland College Women's team opened Ponzio Stadium with a bang on Saturday afternoon. With a large crowd on hand to witness the first home game of the season, the LumberJills were able to shake off a defeat earlier in the week for a hard fought victory.

The Jills, using a similar starting lineup as Thursday, were able to create more offense on Saturday, out-shooting the Muskies 9-8 in the contest. Elysabeth Lough was back in net and the sophomore keeper made saves on all four of the shots on goal against her. Saleen Thepmontry paced the Jills with three shots on goal, but it was Haverkampf who was able to get the Jills on the board first. With time running out in the first half and a fight for the ball in the middle of the field MaKaria Ottum found a lane to play a pass through the back-line of the defense to Haverkampf, who was off to the races. Needing only to beat the keeper, she hit a low shot passed a diving Haley Rich for the first goal of the season and a 1-0 halftime lead.

The teams traded opportunities for much of the second half. Each team finished with two corner kicks in the second half and three total. The Muskies best opportunity came off one of those corners when a loose ball at the top of the box found a wide open Muskie, who hit the shot wide.

"Today was a great way to bounce back from Thursday," said Head Coach Dan Dubois. "I am proud of how we stuck to the game plan and how bought in we are to the process right now. It was a hard fought game and coming out on top will give us a boost of confidence heading into next week. I thought the whole group played as a unit today and, if the players keep believing in themselves and each other, positive results will continue to happen."

The LumberJills will be back at home on Tuesday for a contest with Finlandia University. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM at Ponzio Stadium.
