New Ulm, MN - The Northland College Lumberjacks finished their weekend road trip with a spirited battle against the Martin Luther College Knights. The Jacks were able to overcome an eight point first half deficit and pick up a 87-75 win. With the win the Jacks improve to 5-16 and 4-6 in the UMAC while the Knights drop to 4-17 and 1-10 in the UMAC.
The Jacks were dealt a serious blow with 7:55 to go when their leading scorer on the year,
Jordan Brennan fouled out after a dubious foul on a drive from the Knights Ezra Blummer. After two good free throws from Blummer, the Knights led 64-61. The Jacks, led by
Ryan Rawlings, responded with a 7-0 run to take a 68-64 lead. The Knights battled back thanks to Jack Heichelbech as he tied the game at 68-68 with his 16th point of the evening with 4:12 left to play.
The Jacks responded with a 9-0 run that was led by Rawlings and
Kevon Powell to open up a 77-68 lead. After the Knights cut the lead to six with 2:08 to play, Powell was able to euro-step past his defender and finish in the paint. Powell was fouled on the play and he made the free throw to give the Jacks a 80-71 lead. From there, the Jacks were able to make enough free throws to hold on for the 87-75 win.
Rawlings led the Jacks with 30 points. Powell had a career high of 22 points.
Harley Shear led the Jacks with 16 rebounds.
The Jacks are in action next on Friday when they host Northwestern.
