Power Play Goals Doom LumberJacks

Northland Men's Hockey gave up four power play goals as they fell to #5 Augsburg University 1-5.

The Northland College Men's Hockey team concluded their two-game road trip on Saturday night with a non-conference match-up with #5 Augsburg University. After evening the score with a power play goal of their own, the LumberJacks allowed four power play goals to drop the game 1-5.

Augsburg opened the scoring early. Bryson Cecconi won the opening face-off for the LumberJacks, but a neutral zone turnover allowed the Auggies to break out in transition. The first shot of the game put Augsburg on the board just ninteen seconds into the contest. Chris Curr, starting in net for the Jacks, made saves on the next two shots on goal and he got some help from a couple teammates with blocks. The Auggies offensive pressure came to a halt as they were called for a penalty at the 3:03 mark and Northland went on the power play. Andrew Liwiski and Zach Ross each attempted shots from the point before Cecconi got an attempt. Following the block the Jacks were able to set back up. Ross found Liwiski, whose shot was saved and Ty Brown was able to put the rebound in to even the game. For Brown, it is the junior forward's first goal of the season. A Northland penalty two minutes later allowed the Auggies to go on their first power play of the night. After killing the first man advantage the LumberJacks had to fight off a heavy offensive from the Auggies. Curr made eleven saves over the next twelve minutes before Northland was called for another penalty in the periods final minute. Augsburg was just able to beat the buzzer with their first PP goal of the game in the period's final second to take the one goal advantage into intermission.

Unfortunately, the LumberJacks' Penalty Kill unit was called on five times in the second period which lead to three more goals for the Auggies. Augsburg finished the contest four-for-ten in their man advantage opportunities. Curr finished the contest with 31 saves. Freshman Kenny Vought made his LumberJack debut starting the thrid period. He recorded nine saves in the scoreless final period.

Northland (0-5-1, 0-0-0 WIAC) will open conference play next Friday at UW-Eau Claire. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
