Jacks Win Thriller at Superior

Ashland, WI - The Northland College Lumberjacks prevailed in overtime in a back and fourth UMAC contest at UW-Superior on Saturday afternoon.  After a thrilling regulation that ended tied at 72-72, the Jacks prevailed in overtime thanks to some sharp shooting and a timely defensive stop from Jordan Brennan.  With the win the Jacks are now 4-15 on the year but more importantly sit at 3-5 in the UMAC.

With the score tied at 72-72, the Jacks had two chances in the final minute but ultimately were unable to get a shot off.  First with thirty five seconds to go, Brennan tried to dribble past his defender but after absorbing enough contact to send him to the floor, the Yellowjackets were able to knock the ball loose and create a steal to gain a chance on the other end.  The Jacks put together a solid possession of defense and after a tough Yellowjackets shot, Harley Shear grabbed the rebound for the Jacks.  Before Shear could cross half and get up a last second shot, a Yellowjacket defender was able to create another steal, but his wild shot as the clock expired was no good which forced the five minute overtime.

The Jacks wasted no time in overtime as they quickly jumped out to a 77-72 lead.  Shear drove past his man and banked in a runner, and on the Jacks next possession Hunter Moe drilled a three pointer from deep just as the shot clock expired.  The Yellowjackets responded as they traded baskets with the Jacks' Brennan until the score was set at 84-83.  On the Yellowjackets final possession, needing any type of basket to win it, Brennan came up with a steal and was able to dribble out the clock to give his team the win.

Brennan was the games high scorer with 30 points and nine rebounds.  Shear added 22 points to go with 10 rebounds and Moe had 19 points.  "The guys played their hearts out tonight," commented Jacks Head Coach Scott Sorenson.  "Tremendous guts, even when things didn't go our way.  Jordan, Harley, and Hunter might have led the way, but I think everyone recognizes that it was a total team win.  Everyone was into it.  It's just a joy to coach this group."

The Jacks are in action next on Friday when they travel to Bethany Lutheran.
