ASHLAND, Wis.--- The Northland College Softball team hosted Northwestern MN this afternoon at LumberJill Field in a UMAC conference doubleheader. The Jills, who needed at-least one win today to clinch a UMAC playoff spot, fell by a final score score of 7-4 in game one, setting up a must win game two. The Jills answered the bell, rolling the Eagles 8-0 in 5 innings, clinching a UMAC playoff birth for the first time since 2014.
Game 1
In game one,
Sofia Garcia would get the start on the mound for the Jills. The Jills struck first in the bottom of the first inning as
Kayla Preisler had an rbi hit, scoring
Markia Smith to make it 1-0. In the second,
Kaylee Harnack crushed an rbi triple to right field, scoring
Remi Orr to make it 2-0 for the Jills. After 3 runs from the Eagles in the third,
Elizabeth Peters tied the game up with an rbi double to right center to make it 3-3. UNW however opened up the scoring in the top of the 6th inning, scoring three runs and added another in the 7th to take the 7-3 lead. Peters continued her hot hitting in the bottom of the 7th with an rbi single to center, scoring
Saylor Donnelly but the Jills rally ended, falling to the Eagles in game one, 7-4.
Remi Orr led all LumberJills at the plate in game one going 3X4 with 1 run scored.
Game 2
After dropping game one, the Jills needed a victory in game two to continue the 2021 season and advance to the UMAC playoffs next week.
Kayla Preisler got the start on the mound for the Jills. Once again, the Jills were able to open the scoring in the bottom of the first as
Markia Smith reached on a fielder's choice, scoring
Jenna Reyes to make it 1-0. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and the score still 1-0
Saylor Donnelly mashed a grand slam over the left field wall to burst open the scoring for the Jills and make it a 6-0 LumberJill lead. The bats continued to stay alive in the 5th inning as Preisler scored off of a throw down to second and
Kaylee Harnack finished the game with an rbi single as the Jills took game two, 8-0 in five innings and punched their ticket to the UMAC playoffs next week in Duluth, MN.
Natalie Erler led all LumberJills in game two at the plate going a perfect 3X3 with two runs scored.
Preisler finished her day on the mound pitching 5 shutout innings and only allowed 3 hits.
UMAC Tournament
The Jills, who clinched the #4 seed today, open the 2021 UMAC Tournament next Thursday (May 13th) vs. #5 UW-Superior in Duluth, MN. Game time is set to start at 10am.
