Saints Pull Away from Jills

Duluth, MN -The Northland College Lumberjills fell to the St. Scholastica Saints 76-59 on Wednesday in Duluth, MN.  The Jills defeated the Saints earlier in the season in Ashland, so the Saints were focused on not allowing the Jills to get the sweep.  Freshman Sarah Dunbar attacked the basket for a left handed layup to start the game, but then Saints went on a 6-0 run after the Dunbar bucket.  Freshman Bailey Wynn split a pair of free throw and Dunbar made both free throws after being fouled on the next NC possession to bring the Jills within in one, 6-5 with 5:06 to go in the quarter.  The Saints went on another offensive run as the Jill struggled to score.  The first quarter ended with the Saints up 17-10.  NC shot only 17% from the floor in the quarter.

Junior Sarah Houle scored in the paint for the Jills to start the quarter, but the Saints fired right back with a 3-point basket.  Behind a two-point and three-point basket from Dunbar and a two-point bucket from fellow Freshman Ashley Lopez, the Jills only trailed by 3 with 6:38 left in the half.  The Saints split a pair of free throws on their next possession but Sophomore Bianca Avalos hit a 3-pointer to bring the Jills within 1.  The Jills shot much better in the second quarter, but USS went on another run, scoring primarily in the paint.  The half would end with the Saints getting multiple offensive rebounds and they were able to score inside at the buzzer to head into halftime up 10, 40-30.  The improved shooting and relentless full court defense helped the Jills stay close.

The Saints jumped out to a big lead at the start of the third quarter as the Jills were unable to scored until the 5:07 mark.  USS went up 46-30 before Sophomore Aja Gregg scored inside.  The Jills found some offensive rhythm after that scored three point plays on the next two possessions.  One by Dunbar and the other from Wynn.  That brought NC within 8 with 4:07 to go in the quarter.  The Saints scored inside to stop the NC run, but Freshman Alex Espinoza had a nifty up and under move on the next play for the Jills to keep the Saints lead at 8.  The Jills offense stalled again for the remainder of the quarter and the Saints extended their lead to 59-46 after three quarters.

NC continued to battle throughout the fourth quarter but the size advantage the Saints had inside wore the Jills down.  The Saints scored 48 of their 76 points in the paint and the duo of Morgan Anderson and Kaylee Kennedy scored 22 points each for USS.  The Jills were lead by Dunbar who had a solid offensive night with 16 points.  Wynn scored 11 points while Avalos and Lopez chipped in 10 each.  NC was still able to force 24 turnovers on a much bigger USS team.  The Jills are at home on Saturday as they face UMAC opponent Minnesota Morris.
