Ashland, WI - The Northland College Lumberjills fell to the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars 95-59 on Saturday in Ashland. The Jills kept things within in reach in the first quarter, but the size, depth and length of the Cougars wore Northland down.
Morris scored the first two baskets of the night but then Sophomore Post Player
Aja Gregg stepped out to the perimeter and hit a 3-pointer to get the Jills on the board. The Cougars scored on their next possession while Gregg had a nice up and under move on the next possession to keep the Jills within 1 point. After a defensive stand, Gregg was fouled inside and split the free throws to tie the game at 6. After another Cougar basket, Freshman
Sarah Dunbar tied the game up at 8 with a nifty left-handed drive. When Morris scored again, Dunbar fired back a 3-pointer to give the Jills their first lead, 11-10 with 6:20 to go in the quarter. The Cougars took the lead back on the next possession, but Freshman
Bailey Wynn nabbed a steal and scored inside to give Northland the lead again at 13-12. This would be the last lead for Northland as their offensive stalled. The Cougars offensive began to roll and they ended the quarter up 28-17.
The Cougars offense really started to roll as they started the quarter with a 16-2 run to start the quarter and their lead ballooned to 44-19 with 4:11 to go. The Cougars outscored the Jills 31-13 in the second quarter to end the half up 59-30.
Minnesota Morris extended their lead to 81-42 after three quarters, outscoring the Jills again 22-12 in the quarter. Morris was able to attack the lane easily and finish inside against the undersized Jills. NC continued to fight and outscored the Cougars 17-14 in the final quarter, but the game was already out of reach. Morris shot very well from the field, shooting 56.5% from two-point range and 47.1% from three-point range. Northland continued to struggle to score, shooting 31.7% from two-point range and 25% from three-point range. Morris also scored 60 of their points in the paint.
