Jacks Split With Augsburg to Open 2020 Season

Minneapolis, MN-

The Northland College Baseball team opened the 2020 season late last night at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN with a double header vs. Augsburg University. The Jacks would earn the split, winning game 1, 4-3 and fell in game 2, 7-6. 

Game 1

Game 1 saw Riley Reuter get the nod on the mound for the Jacks and early on he was impressive. The Jacks would strike first in the bottom of the first inning as Garrett Warren would lay a sac bunt down, scoring Earl Kraft to make it 1-0. The Jacks would make it 2-0 in the 2nd inning as Jake Schramm would score off of a throwing error but Augsburg would respond, scoring 2 runs in the 5th and 1 run in the 6th inning to take the 3-2 lead. Shawn O'Connell would come in to pitch for the Jacks in the 5th inning and get out of the Jam to keep it 3-2. Down a run, the Jacks would respond in the 6th as Earl Kraft singled to center field scoring Adrian Bethel to tie the game at 3. The Jacks would later take the lead later in the inning as Joseph Veit would hammer a single down the right field line, scoring Kraft to make it 4-3 for the Jacks. O'Connell would continue to pitch in the 7th inning and close the door for the Jacks taking game 1 4-3. 

Kraft would lead all LumberJack hitters in game one, going 2-3 at the plate while also scoring 2 runs. 

Reuter would go 5.2 innings, giving up 6 hits and allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 4. O'Connell would pitch brilliatnly in relief going 1.1 innings to finish the game only allowing 1 hit. 

Game 2

In game 2, Adrian Bethel would get the start on the mound for the Jacks. Northland would take the early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Joseph Veit and Taylor Shaw would both collect sac RBI's. The Jacks would widen their lead in the third as Bethel would rip a 2 RBI double down the right field line, scoring Keaton Arreazola and Jake Schramm. Veit would collect another sac rbi hit, scoring Noah Cross to make it 6-0 Jacks in the third inning. Augsburg would however respond, with runs in the 3rd and 5th innings to make it 6-3. Taylor Shaw, Kyle Wallace and Earl Kraft would all see time in relief but it wouldn't be enough to slow down the Augsburg bats as they would score 3 runs in the 6th inning to take the 7-6 lead. Schramm would try to get the rally going in the 7th inning, reaching on an error but it wouldn't be enough as Augsburg would take game 2, 7-6. 

Bethel would lead the Jacks at the plate in game two going 2-3 with 2 RBI's and 1 run scored. 

The Jacks will travel to Fort Pierce, FL next week for their Spring break trip. The Jacks will open vs. Elizabethtown College on Sunday March 1st. Game one of the double header is set for 10am (EST).
