Cold Shooting Sinks Jills

The Northland College Lumberjills fell to the University of Northwestern Eagles 70-48 on Saturday in Ashland.  The Jills shot just 22% for the game and only scored 5 points, all on free throws, in the third quarter.

The Eagles won the tip and immediately they went inside, where they have the heigh advantage over Northland, but they were called for an offensive foul.  The Jills freshman Sarah Dunbar took the ball right to into the post players of UNW, but missed a layup inside.  The Eagles star guard Kelsea Lund came back down and scored inside for UNW.  Sophomore Aja Gregg got the Jills on the board when she put back a missed shot from Freshman Miranda Wagner.  The teams traded baskets through the quarter until the Eagles went on a run to go ahead by 7, 15-8.  The Jills weren't ready to let the Eagles steal the momentum completely and Wagner hit a jumper and fellow Freshman Bailey Wynn hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to bring NC within 2, 15-13. The Eagles took back control of the quarter and led 21-16 though one quarter.

The Eagles Miranda Crenshaw and Jills Aja Gregg, both post players, battled head to head to start the second quarter. Crenshaw and Gregg both traded baskets on four consecutive possessions.  Gregg scored inside and from the elbow to keep the Jills in the game.  The Eagles extended their lead to 10, 32-22 on a 3 pointer from Lund.  NC tried to cut into their lead, but Dunbar picked up her 3rd foul with 48.8 to go and the Eagles hit their free throws to again put UNW up 10, 38-28.  Wagner hit a big 3-pointer for the Jills and Sophomore Lindsay Bressette was fouled with 10.9 seconds to go.  Bressette split the pair and the Jills headed into halftime down 9, 40-31.

The third quarter started out slow for both teams as neither team scored until 5:42 was left in the quarter.  Despite stopping the Eagles defensively, the Jills just couldn't find their offensive rhythm and were 0-16 for the quarter.  This allowed the Eagles to take control and go up 50-36 after three quarters.

NC shot slightly better in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles shot 53% in the quarter to extend their lead and finish the game up 22, 70-48.

Despite the shooting woes, NC forced 19 turnovers from a veteran Eagles team.  The Jills full court pressure wore down the Eagles at times.  No Lumberjills scored in double figures, but Dunbar, Wagner and Wynn all finished with 9 points.  Gregg and Bressette both had 8 points.  Gregg also nabbed 9 rebounds in an all around solid performance for the Jills.  Lund and Megan Roberts led the Eagles with 17 each.

The Jills are on the road on Wednesday against the tough UMAC foe, UW-Superior.
