The Northland College Lumberjills fell 101-60 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellow Jackets on Wednesday. Perennial conference powerhouse UWS used their size advantage, full court pressure and senior leadership to defeat Northland.
The Jills scored first as Sophomore
Aja Gregg put back a miss from Freshman
Miranda Wagner. The Yellow Jackets fired back with a 7-0 run which was their first of many throughout the game. Sophomore
Lindsay Bressette drove to the basket after NC forced a turnover and Freshman
Alex Espinoza scored three the hard way to tie things up at 7. That was the closest NC would get as UWS held on to and extended their lead to 28-13 after the first quarter. Bressette also went down in the first quarter with an apparent knee injury and did not return.
Gregg, who has been a very consistent force in the post the last few games for the Jills, started the second quarter with her own three point play, but the Yellow Jackets continued to roll. NC lost another player in the second quarter when Wagner was sidelined after getting hit in the face. She would return in the second half. NC fought back and cut into the lead as Freshman
Sruti Bhakta grabbed a steal and went in for a layup to bring the Jills deficit to 10, 32-22. UWS cruised after that ending the half up 52-29.
The press from UWS really worn down the Jills and with the length of the Yellow Jackets on defense, the Jills had a hard time getting their offense going. NC struggled to score in the second half as UWS continue to roll.
UWS was led by Eva Reinersten with 19, Emily Carpenter with 16 and Kaelyn Christian chipped in 10. Northland was led by Freshman
Sarah Dunbar with 10 points. Dunbar found seams in the UWS defense and attacked the basket. Gregg and Freshman
Bailey Wynn chipped in 9 each for the Jills.
NC is on the road on Saturday as they travel to New Ulm, MN to face UMAC opponent Martin Luther.
