Jills Sweep Thunder

Angola, IN –

The Jills squared off against Trine University today for their second Northern Collegiate Hockey Association contest of the weekend against the Thunder.

The Jills fell behind early, as the Thunder took a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes elapsed in the period. The Thunder would widen their lead late in the period, putting the Jills in a 2-0 deficit. The Jills struck back in the final second as Samantha Scott put it in the back of the net, cutting the Thunder lead in half. She was assisted by Robyn Matula and Mackenzie Guimond. The Jills would go into the second down 2-1.

The Jills attacked the net early and often in the second as they controlled the puck. The Thunder would try to answer, but the Jills would keep them out of the net. With 9:34 elapsed in the second Samantha Scott would tie it up for the Jills as she would once again rip a shot past the Thunder goaltender. She was assisted by Saylor Donnelly. The Jills would go into the third tied up at 2-2.

The Jills broke the 2-2 tie early in the third as Samantha Scott would score her third goal of the game, completing the hat trick. She was assisted by Allyson Reilly and Michaela Isetts-Williams. They would continue to put distance between themselves and the Thunder as Emma Vandergeest would add an insurance goal with a little over five minutes remaining in the game. She was assisted by Megan Adair. Trine would score a controversial extra attacker goal with under a minute remaining as the clock wouldn't start after the faceoff. However, the officials would get together and take time off the clock. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the period, Ashley Hammes would help secure the win by getting the puck deep. She and Emma Vandergeest then kept the puck down low on the boards, running out the remaining time on the clock.

"We had everyone going and that was a big game changer. The energy on and off the ice is what sealed the win. If we keep that same energy and mentality next weekend, I'm sure we will come out successful again.", said Scott.

Head Women's Hockey Coach Kelly Rider commented on her teams' performance, "It was a frustrating start when we couldn't execute on our multiple power plays and then had Trine score two goals on top of it. In the end, today and this weekend were huge. We came from behind in both games and played a tough team that was above us in the standings on the road. I think our team showed a lot of resilience and heart. I hope as a team we can have that same mentality and collective effort right from the start next weekend. I'm most proud of the effort from our fourth line today. Emma Vandergeest, Ally Covert, Megan Adair, and Madysen Zachmeier really stepped up for us today. Without their hard work today, the win wouldn't have been possible."

Gabby Suhr recorded 22 saves in the game.

The Jills will be on the road 2/15 at St. Norbert College. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
