Jills Lose Heartbreaker

Ashland, WI -

In an emotional game that saw 50 fouls called, Northland College fell to Crown College 52-50.

The five NC seniors were honored before the game and those emotions showed early as it took both teams awhile to get into the flow offensively.  McKayla Waggoner finally hit a shot underneath for NC's first points. Crown then went up 6-2 on a couple of back door layups.  The first quarter continued to go back and forth and Emily Howe's three point attempt at the buzzer fell short. Northland trailed by 1 after the first quarter 10-9.  Sarah Houle got the LumberJills going to start the second quarter with a strong rebound and put-back.  Crown went on a run later in the quarter and their lead grew to 9 at 20-11.  Waggoner scored with 2:44 left to give NC some much needed energy.  Emily Howe followed that up with a triple and cut the lead to 4 at 20-16.  Crown hit a layup and then Howe converted at the line to make the score 22-18 Crown going into the locker room.

Sarah Houle hit a huge 3 to start the quarter for Northland and Emily Nielsen hit a jumper off of a steal from Houle. Both teams continued to battle and the score stayed tight.  Ashton Meadows hit a baseline jumper to make the score 31-29.  Meadows was called for a technical foul after the shot but Crown missed both free throws.  The LumberJills continued their momentum after the missed free throws and NC's lead ballooned to 7 at 36-29.  Crown continued to cut into the NC lead and finished the quarter only down 3, 37-34.

The fourth quarter began with a 3 point shot from Bianca Avalos but Crown answered back, hitting two free throws from an NC foul.  Lindsay Bressette followed up with 2 free throws of her own and NC lead 42-37.  A rare three point shot from Crown brought the score to 42-40, then the Storm hit a layup to tie the score with 6:41 to go in the game.  Bressette hit another basket to give the lead back to the LumberJills but on the next possession, Avalos committed her fifth foul and Crown hit the free throws to tie the game again.  After missing a shot on the next possession, Emily Nielsen got a steal and went in for the layup to give the lead back to the LumberJills 46-44.  The fouls for NC continued to add up and Crown took advantage going up 50-47.  With 1:20 left, Bressette was fouled and hit one of two from the charity stripe and the LumberJills trailed by 2, 50-48.  Crown answered back with a layup and went up 52-48.  Houle was fouled on the next possession and split the pair to cut the lead to 3 with 47.1 to go. Ashton Meadows got the rebound on the next Crown shot but was fouled hard and had to leave the game with an injury.  Sarah Houle came in to shoot the free throws for Meadows.  Houle made the first and missed the second but McKayla Waggoner came up with a huge offensive rebound and the LumberJills called a timeout with 9.9 seconds to go.  Northland got the ball inside to Waggoner on the last possession but despite heavy contact, no foul was called and the LumberJills fell 52-50.

Emily Nielsen led NC with 10 points.  NC hosts St. Scholastica on Wednesday for their last home game of the season.
