Jills Stumble Against Rams

Minneapolis, MN -

The Northland LumberJills attempt to avenge a loss against the North Central Rams fell short on Wednesday night as Northland fell 60-55.  The LumberJills lost to the Rams by 19 earlier in the year and Northland gave North Central all they could handle for 4 quarters.  The LumberJills started out quick going up 5-0 with a baseline jumper from Ashton Meadows and a long 3 from Bianca Avalos.  North Central then went on a 6-0 run to make the score 6-5.  Northland gave up 3 point play the hard way to end the quarter but the LumberJills only trailed 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the score go back and forth as Northland went ahead 19-18 on a put-back from Katie Taylor, but then North Central went on another run and ended the quarter up 24-20 at the half.

Northland continued to lock in on defense in the third quarter, but when forced to make some substitutions, the North Central lead grew to 8, with the score at 36-28.  The LumberJills finished the third quarter down by 7 with a score of 42-35.

Emily Nielsen cut the lead to 5 with a layup and the score was 46-41 with 6:19 to go. Lindsay Bressette followed up with a 3 pointer that got Northland within 2.   Both teams continued to battle and Northland tied the score at 53 with 1:47 to go.  Northland fouled on the next possession and gave up 1 free throw and allowed North Central to get the offensive rebound on the second free throw miss and the Rams made the next two free throws.  The LumberJills were forced to foul once again and despite another clutch basket from Lindsay Bressette, the LumberJills couldn't close it out and the Rams hit their free throws.  The final score was 60-55.

Senior Emily Nielsen and Freshman Lindsay Bressette both played outstanding defense on the Rams best player.  Nielsen also addded 5 points, 6 reoubnds and 4 steals while Bressette took the game over offensively and finished with 21 points.  Haleigh Filer led the Rams with 22 points.  Northland is home on Saturday and they host Crown College for Senior Day.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
