Jacks Pick Up Win in Season Opener

Jacksonville, IL-

The Northland College Baseball team kicked off the 2019 season today as they traveled to Jacksonville, IL for a double header vs. Iowa Wesleyan. The Jacks would explode for 14 runs in game one, winning 14-5 and picked up the rare tie in game two 5-5. 

Game 1 

In game one, Adrian Bethel would get the nod on the mound for the LumberJacks. In the top of the first, the Jacks would jump out to the quick 3-0 lead as Shawn O'Connell would single to left field, scoring Garrett Warrenn. Austin Stuckart would later score on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Rian Arreazola would single to 2nd base, scoring O'Connell to make it 3-0. The Jacks would keep their foot on the gas in the top of the 2nd as Noah Cross would hammer a double to center field for 2 RBI. Carson Ferry and Arreazola would both pick up hits in the inning. Iowa Wesleyan would pick up three runs in the bottom of the 2nd but the LumberJacks would pick up two more runs in the top of the 4th inning as Noah Cross led off the inning with a single and was followed up with a 2 RBI home run blast from Adrian Bethel to make it 9-3. Iowa Wesleyan would make things interesting in the bottom of the 5th inning to make it 9-5 but the Jacks bats would stay hot scoring 5 runs in the 6th inning off of 3 hits to make it 14-5. 

Kyle Wallace and Jonathan Knusta would come in relief for a combined 1.1 innings to shut the door as the Jacks would take game 1 14-5. 

The Jacks would out hit Iowa Wesleyan 12-8 in game one. Noah Cross and Ben Matteson would both pick up 3 hits. 

Adrian Bethel pitched 5.2 innings giving up 5 runs off of 5 hits, walking 4 and striking out 9. 

Game 2

In game two, Riley Reuter would get the start on the mound for the LumberJacks. With rain starting to increase and the temperature starting to drop, the Jacks bats would go cold until the top of the 3rd inning as the Jacks would pick up 5 runs off of 4 hits from Austin Stuckart, Noah Cross, Adrian Bethel and Ben Matteson. The 5 runs in the 3rd would be the only runs of the game for the LumberJacks as Iowa Wesleyan would start to chip away at the LumberJack lead with 2 runs in the 3rd, 2 runs in the 4th and 1 run in the 5th. After the bottom of the 5th, the game was called due to fog and the game would end in a 5-5 tie. 

Reuter would pitch 5.0 innings, giving up 5 runs off of 5 hits, walking 4 and picked up 4 strikeouts. Stuckart would lead the Jacks at the dish going 2-3. 

The Jacks will be back in action tomorrow vs. Iowa Wesleyan for a double head again tomorrow in Jacksonville, IL. Game 1 is set to start at 1pm.
