Jacks Surge Past Sabercats

Ashland, WI - The Northland College Lumberjacks got their first win of the season on Saturday evening, using a strong second half to beat the Maranatha Baptist College Sabercats by a score of 80-68.   The win improves the Jacks to 1-3 while the Sabercats dropped to 0-3.

Benny Larry Jr. scored a team high 19 points for the Jacks.  Harley Sheer recorded ten boards, and local standout Jordan Brennan chipped in seven points and four assists.  Brennan got the Jacks going early on with two three pointers that helped the Jacks jump out to an early lead.

The Jacks led by as many as 14 early on, but the Sabercats remained in the game and eventually started chipping away at the lead.  The Sabercats pulled within two at the end of the first half, but Brennan was fouled with only two seconds remaining and he extended the lead to three from the free throw line.

The second half was a much different story as the Sabercats started strong and quickly tied the game at 41-41 after a three pointer from Stephen Wilkerson.  Wilkerson was the Sabercats leading scorer with 17 for the game.  A flurry of Jacks turnovers allowed the Sabercats to take their first lead of the evening and after a layup by Taylor Ball, they lead 47-43.  The Jacks responded quickly with a three from Anders Prater, which was then followed by a transition three from Max May to give the Jacks a 49-47 lead.  From there, the Jacks would never relinquish the lead and eventually started to pull away.  Over the final 9:25, the Jacks would outscore the Sabercats 21-10 and finish the game at 80-68.

The Jacks are in action next on Wednesday, November 20th when they host Oaks Christian.  Tip off is set for 7:00pm.
