Ashland, WI - The Northland College Lumberjills opened WIAC play against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Clair Blugolds on Friday evening. The Bluegolds were able to use goals in the second and third periods to pull away from the Jills and earn a 3-0 win.
The Jills didn't back down to the defending WIAC Champions and had several chances to take the lead in the first period, but the game ultimately entered the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0. In the second period, Sami Meister finally was able to beat the Jills
Gabby Suhr to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead. Suhr held the blugolds at bay for the rest of the period to keep the score at 1-0.
The Blugolds added to their lead early on in the third period. Emily Bauer was able to deflect a shot from the blue line and the touch was just enough to beat Suhr to give the Blugolds a 2-0 lead. With just under two minutes left in the game, Bauer added a second goal to extend the lead to 3-0.
Suhr had a strong performance in net and finished with a game high 34 saves for the Jills.
The Jills continue WIAC play tomorrow at when they take on University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The game is set to start at 7:00pm.
