The Jills hosted Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opponent the Marian University Sabres tonight at the Bay Area Civic Center.
The Jills would get into trouble early as two quick penalties would put them in a 5 on 3 situation, but their strong defensive play would allow them to get out of it unscathed. The Jills would come close on multiple shots, but wouldn't be able to get the puck in the back of the net. They would go into the first intermission with the scoreless tie intact.
The Jills strong defensive play continued in the second half as they battled for control of the puck. Neither team would be able to break through early as they would trade shots with one another. However, with 16:32 elapsed in the period
Saylor Donnelly would put a shot between the pipes, breaking the scoreless tie and giving the Jills the first goal of the game. She was assisted by
Michaela Isetts-Williams and
Mikayla Santjer on the play. The Jills weren't able to add to their lead before the end of the period. They would go into the third up 1-0.
The Jills added to their lead in the third with 7:22 elapsed in the period, as
Robyn Matula found the back of the net, giving the Jills a 2-0 lead. She was assisted by
Karadyn Kiviaho and
Ashley Hammes on the play. With a little over five minutes remaining in the game
Karadyn Kiviaho would rip a shot into the net, putting the Jills up 3-0. The Sabres would score late in the period, but the Jills would hold on. They won by a final score of 3-1.
Gabby Suhr finished the night with 24 saves.
The Jills will be back at home tomorrow (1/19) where they will square off against the Marian University Sabres for the second game of their weekend doubleheader. Puck drop is set for 4pm.
