Adrian, MI -
The Jills squared off against the #6 ranked Adrian College Bulldogs today for the second time in as many days.
The Jills pressured the Bulldogs right away in the first period, but couldn't get any shots to land. The Bulldogs attacked often, but the Jills strong defensive performance would carry over from the night before as they would hold the Bulldogs scoreless. The teams would go into the first intermission tied up at 0-0.
In the second, the Jills would continue to get shots on net, but still wouldn't be able to break through. The Bulldogs would strike first with under a minute remaining. They would take their 1-0 lead over the Jills into the third period.
The Jills once again came out on the offensive early in the period, launching shots on goal. However, it wouldn't be enough as the Bulldogs would be able to preserve their 1-0 lead. The Jills would fall by a final score of 1-0.
Junior Defenseman
Amanda Abounader commented, "I think this weekend the Jills showed that heart is more important than a reputation and that underestimating us makes us stronger. Even though we didn't come out with a W on the scoreboard, we came out with a W inside and out as a team. We are expecting the wins to show on the scoreboard more and more if we continue to play like we finished today."
The Jills didn't allow any Bulldog power play goals over the weekend, while goaltender
Gabby Suhr would record 41 saves on the day.
"I think this weekend is a good momentum builder for the rest of the season. I think this weekend helped prove to ourselves that we can be successful no matter who we are playing", said Suhr after the game.
Head women's hockey coach
Kelly Rider had this to say about the Jills' first weekend of conference play, "We came out flat in the first today and didn't take advantage of some opportunities, but we got back to playing Jills hockey in the second and third. We had a huge 5 on 3 penalty kill in the third to stay in it. Despite not getting any points in the standings this weekend, I think we proved our win last year wasn't a fluke. I think we continue to show rapid improvement in such a young program and weekends like this help our team continue to gain confidence."
The Jills will be back on the ice 11/9 at home against the College of St. Scholastica. The game is scheduled to begin at 4pm.
