RANTOUL, Ill. – Sunday afternoon, the Northland College Baseball team was defeated 11-6 to Augustana College and 13-0 to Beloit College in its final games in Rantoul, Ill.
The Jacks started the game at the plate.
Nathan Davison had the team's first hit with a single to left field, and
Bradley Stoner followed with Northland's first homerun of the season to put the LumberJacks on top 2-0 in the first. The lead was short-lived as the Vikings would level the game in the bottom half of the inning and then go up 3-2 at the end of the second.
The third inning started with
Tyler Murphy reaching on an error; two stolen bases later, he was at third.
Ridge Guyette singled to drive Murphy home and knot the score up at three. A pair of Northland errors in the bottom of the third gave the lead back to the Vikings. The LumberJacks continued to fight back three singles in the fourth by
Jonjay Arreazola, Murphy, and Davison, had NC tied at 4-4. Augustana would then go on to score four runs in the bottom half of the innings. The Jacks would be able to score two more runs but would ultimately fall 11-6.
Northland had 12 hits in the contest, with Murphy having a team-high of three. Davison and Arreazola also had a multiple hit game each totaling two. Stoner and
Gabe Villa had extra-base hits, with Stoner sending the ball over the fence and Villa reaching second. Davison and Stoner led the team with two RBIs, and all six runs were scored by a different LumberJack.
Andrew Birko started the game on the bump for the Jacks, going 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and five earned runs. Nathan Melby of AU earned the win after coming in for relief with five Ks in 3.1 innings.
In game two, Northland was unable to send a run home and only recorded three hits in the game.
Caden Willis and
Jay Harris each singled, and Guyette tripled in sixth but was left in scoring position. The Buccaneers struck early, scoring in the first, and did not look back.
Andy Linder started the game for the Jacks on the mound, and Will Lyng picked up the win for Beloit.
Thomas Szymanski pitched a scoreless inning for Northland in the final inning.
The LumberJacks start the MattRuss Tournament on Tuesday. Northland will play four games spanning a week in Florida.
