Volleyball defeated in final day of the Earlham Tournament

Wooster bests Northland in the final day of the Tournament

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Northland College Volleyball team was bested by the College of Wooster 3-0 (15-25, 19-25, and 17-25), on Saturday morning at the Earlham Tournament in Richmond, Ind.
 
To start the match, Britta Josephson scored the point for Northland with Kodie Rempp assisting her. NC kept it close early with Leah Allan scoring on two attacks to make the score 4-5. The Scots would then start to pull away with a three-point run. Lily Zapp stopped the run with a kill assisted by Josephson. Wooster continued to pad its lead this time scoring five unanswered. Northland scored on back-to-back plays with a kill from Allan and a service ace from Hannah Fisher. Both teams traded three-point rallies to make the score 16-10 in favor of the Scots. The deficit was too much to over as Northland dropped the first set 15-25.
 
Set two was neck-and-neck to start. Back-to-back kills from Allan and Josephson tied it up at seven all. Points continued to be traded until the Scots put together a small run to take a four-point lead. Northland started to chip away at the lead first on an error by Wooster then a kill from Allan. To end the set Wooster went on a 6-to-1 run to reach set point. Northland then scored five points in a row with Josephson scoring on a kill to make the score 19-24. Wooster called a timeout and found the winning point right after to take set two 25-19.
 
Northland had an early two-point lead to start set three with Rempp and Ellison DeZwarte getting their first kills of the match. The Scots answered back with eight unanswered points. Allan broke up the scoring with Rempp assisting on the point. Trailing by eight Northland started to make some headway after scoring three in a row including a service ace from Allan. Northland found itself down big but still rattled off a five-point run including a kill from Josephson. Josephson would score the final two points for Northland on a kill and ace but would fall in the end 17-25.
 
Josephson led the attack for Northland with eight kills and a hitting percentage of .179. Allan was right behind her with seven. Kennedy Gruhlke, Rempp, Zapp, and DeZwarte all totaled a kill in the match. Northland scored off the serve four times with Fisher doing it twice and Josephson and Allan having one service ace. Rempp set up the attack with 11 assists.
 
Defensively, Josephson was also the front-runner with 12 digs. Rempp and Allan were close behind with 10 and 9 respectively. The combination of Josephson and DeZwarte combined on a block for Northland's sole block of the match.
 
Next week Northland travels to De Pere, Wis., for the St. Norbert College Chick-fil-A Invitational. Northland will start the invitational out with Carroll University on Friday at 3 p.m.
