ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Baseball team dropped the first game of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference series to Martin Luther College 10-3 Saturday afternoon in Ashland, Wis.
After the game, the seniors were honored for their time at Northland;
Blake Richard,
Zach Ross,
Hunter Wicklund,
Luke Maxwell,
Vinny Troccoli, and
Matt Simpson.
Andrew Birko started on the mound, in his first inning he struck out the first batter and then retired the next two batters. In the bottom half of the inning,
Tyler Murphy led off with a single up the middle, followed by stealing second but would remain as the inning ended.
The Knights would take the lead off a single in the third and would break the game open two batters later with a grand slam by Parker Winghart.
In the sixth the Jacks loaded the bases off singles from Simpson and
Peyton Solberg and a walk from Ross but could not send a run across the plate. In the following inning, Northland scored its first run. The seventh started with a double from
Dezmon LeTexier. Troccoli scored him with a single up the middle. Ross drew his second walk of the game, this time with the bases load to score NC's second run of the game.
In the eighth, Troccoli was on the mound and struck out the side. In the ninth MLC added three more runs. In the final inning for the Jacks, Wicklund drove in the final run of the game with a bases-loaded walk.
The LumberJacks tallied nine hits in the loss with Murphy, Maxwell, and Solberg leading the way with two. LeTexier had the only extra-base hit for NC with a double in the seventh. Troccoli, Ross, and Wicklund all recorded an RBI in the game.
In his start, Birko pitched 5.2 innings, striking out five batters and giving up six earned runs. Troccoli pitched the final 3.1 innings with four Ks and three earned runs.
The Jacks wrap up their season tomorrow (Sunday) with a doubleheader against the Knights starting at noon.
