ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Baseball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior 7-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Tuesday afternoon in Ashland, Wis.
The win improved the Jacks to 6-17 overall and 3-9 in the UMAC. The Yellowjackets fall to 14-12 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Kazdion Mount started on the mound for the Jacks and had a one-two-three first inning, followed by the Northland batters going down in order. Mount continued to deal on the mound facing three more batters and capped off the second with a strikeout.
Matt Simpson had the first hit of the game with an infield hit in the second inning.
Anthony Boyle singled shortly after to put runners on first and second.
Hunter Wicklund attempted to move the runners with a sac bunt but an error by the pitcher loaded the bases for the Jacks.
Andy Linder drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly. Another error and a balk had Northland up 3-0 after two innings.
The Yellowjackets loaded the bases in the third with only one out. Mount got out of the jam without a run scoring. UWS did score on a single in the fourth. The Jacks turned two the following batter to get out of the inning.
Peyton Solberg moved to the mound in the seventh inning. After walking two batters, the junior sat down the next three to leave two runners on base.
The Jacks added an insurance run in the seventh off an RBI double from Solberg scoring
Tyler Murphy. Northland broke the game open in the eighth. It started with a single from
Luke Maxwell. UWS got two outs but an error saw Maxwell score and from a single by Murphy and another error the Jacks were up 7-1. To end the game Solberg had a one-two-three inning.
Northland tallied 11 hits in the win with three Jacks having a multiple-hit game: Wicklund, Murphy, and Simpson. Murphy and Solberg both doubled in the contest. Murphy also stole a base. Linder had two of the team's four RBIs.
On the mound, Mount pitched six innings, struck out three batters, gave up seven hits, and only allowed one earned run. Solberg pitched a scoreless three innings to end the game to pick up his first collegiate save. Solberg did not give up a hit but walked two batters.
The Jacks start their next series Friday went they host Crown College for a three-game UMAC series at LumberJack Field.
