ASHLAND, Wis. – The Northland College Women's Hockey team wins its first game of 2024 4-1 against the University of Dubuque Wednesday night in Ashland, Wis. Senior
Kiley Sims scored her first collegiate goal in the first and then added her second in the following period.
The first period had a lot of offense by both teams with the Spartans edging out the LumberJills 16-13 in shots. Sims started the scoring eight minutes in.
Kyleigh Moffatt and
Audrey Ellerington assisted on the opening goal.
In the second period, the Jills continued their high-power attack recording 13 shots. Sims added to her first career goal with the winning goal in the following period. Sims netted the winning goal six minutes in. Halfway through the second, it was four on four. The Spartans took advantage with four players scoring to bring the game within one. Moffatt regained the Jills' two-goal lead, getting the assist from
Maddy Bloedel and
Kate Holtz.
In the final period, Holtz put the game away with the final goal to give Northland the 4-1 win.
The Jills recorded 39 shots on target, 13 in each period and their most in a game. Leading the way were
Taylor Richmond and Bloedel each with six shots. Behind the pair was
Hannah Baumann and Holtz with four. Sims had two shots both finding the back of the net. Four student-athletes ended the game with two points; Sims, Holtz, Moffatt, and Ellerington.
Karlee Lehner earned her third win of the season as the Jills surpass their win total from the previous season. Lehner made 29 saves in the win, stopping 16 in the first period.
Northland hosts Aurora University for a two-game series starting on Saturday with a 7 p.m., puck drop.
