LumberJills rally late but can’t find the equalizer

Northland drops last nonconference game of the season

ASHLAND, Wis. – In its final nonconference game of the season the Northland College Women's Hockey team fell 3-2 to Bethel University Tuesday night at the Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland, Wis. The LumberJills pulled within one in the final minute but could not find the equalizer.
 
Northland started fast with Audrey Ellerington recording two shots and Jamie Steinmetz had one all in the first minute. The Royals struck first with their first shot of the game to go up 1-0. Maddy Bloedel had the next chance for the Jills but Anna Hanson turned the shot away. Bethel added to the lead with five minutes left in the period with a goal from Beth Velasco.
 
In the second period, the puck stayed with the Royals for a majority with them recording 16 shots on target. 13 minutes in BU pulled ahead by three with a goal from Abbie Delong. Shortly after Taylor Richmond got the Jills on board with her fourth goal of the season. Kyleigh Moffatt got a shot off in the dying second of the period but could not beat Hanson.
 
The final period had only 12 shots between the teams. In the final minute Northland pulled Karlee Lehner for the extra skater and Elle Black brought Northland within one with 48 seconds remaining. The Jills could not find the back of the net for the third time and ended up falling short 3-2.
 
Northland tallied 18 shots in the game with three student-athletes leading the way with three: Ellerington, Richmond, and Moffatt. Hannah Baumann was behind the trio with two. Earning a point from assists were Ellerington, Steinmetz, Black and Kate Holtz.
 
In net, Lehner made 35 saves with 15 coming in the second period. The defense killed four power plays holding the Royals to only 11 with the extra skater. Northland blocked 18 shots with Bloedel totaling a game-high four.
 
The LumberJills are back in action next week on the 26th when they host the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for a two game series.
