LumberJack Baseball Keep Playoff Hopes Alive Against Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn.--- The Northland College Baseball team continued UMAC action this afternoon, playing a make-up conference game and a non-conference game against Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN. The Jacks took care of business in game one, winning the "conference" game 16-3 but ultimately fell in game two, 11-5. 

Game 1

The Jacks jumped on the pitcher early from MLC, scoring 5 runs to take the early lead in the top of the first inning, Zach Ross, Hunter Wicklund and Anthony Boyle collected rbi's for the Jacks. MLC scored three runs in the bottom of the first but the Jacks responded, scoring a run in the second and three more in the third as Matt Simpson hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Keaton Arreazola. In the third, Tyler Murphy had a sac hit to shortstop, scoring Andy Linder. Later in the inning, Ross had his second hit of the game, hitting an rbi single to left field, scoring Arreazola to give the Jacks a 8-3 lead. Aidan Hernandez, who got the start today for the Jacks, settled in and started to deal, mowing down the batters from MLC through the middle innings and the Jacks were able to add insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings as Ridge Guyette, Murphy, Ross and Linder each collected rbi's to extend the lead and give the Jacks the 16-3 win in game one. 

Hernandez had a tremendous day on the mound for the Jacks, pitching the complete game giving up 0 earned runs on 4 hits and struck out 8 batters. 

Keaton Arreazola and Ridge Guyette led the Jacks at the plate in game one, each collecting three hits. 

Game 2

In game two, Caden Willis led-off the game with a solo homer but MLC had a monster inning in the first at the plate, scoring six runs to take the early 6-1 lead. Trailing 10-1 in the 4th, Murphy hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Vinny Troccoli. Later in the inning, Nolan Hemmesch hit a sac fly to left field, scoring Kurt Price to make the score 10-3. Price also scored on passed ball in the fifth inning but it wouldn't be enough as the Jacks fell in game two, 11-5 to MLC. 

Matt Simpson led all LumberJacks with hits in game two with two.  

The Jacks will close out the regular season this weekend (May 5-6) at LumberJack field against Minnesota Morris, who they are trailing for the final UMAC playoff spot. Friday's game is set to start at 2pm. 

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
