LumberJills Split in Peoria

PEORIA, IL--- The Northland College Softball team traveled to Peoria, IL today for a pair of non-conference games against Mount Mary University and Loras College. The Jills picked up their first win of the season against Mount Mary in game one, winning 7-1 but fell in game two against Loras 11-3.

Game 1 

The LumberJills had two big innings in the top of the first and fourth to cruise to a 7-1 victory over Mount Mary in game 1. In the top of the first inning, Ariana Wilson, McKenna Freerksen and Hailey Minnema each collected RBI hits to give the Jills the early 4-0 lead. The top of the 4th inning was highlighted by a 2 run homer off the bat of Kaylee Harnack, giving the Jills the commanding 7-0 lead. Mount Mary was able to add a run in the bottom of the fourth but Kayla Preisler shut the door in the circle as the Jills went on to win 7-1. 

Preisler pitched 7.0 innings giving up 1 earned run off 8 hits while striking out 2 batters. 

Kaylee Harnack, McKenna Freerksen and Alyssa Riddle each collected two hits in game one for the Jills. 

The win in game one was not only the first win of the season for the LumberJills in the 2023 campaign but the first NCAA win as Head Coach for Cora Zackrison. 

Game 2

Loras opened the scoring in the top of the first but the Jills responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame as Ariana Wilson singled to right center, scoring Freeksen to make it 1-1. After another Loras run in the top the second, the Jills once again tied the game in the bottom of the third as Wilson once again singled, this time scoring Harnack to make it 2-2. Loras however exploded for 7 runs in the 4th and added another in the 5th to take the commanding 11-2 lead. The Jills added a run in the 5th but it wouldn't be enough, falling to Loras in game two 11-3. 

Harnack and Wilson each collected two hits for the Jills in game two. 

The Jills are back in action in Peoria tomorrow (March 3rd) for a single game against Mount Mary. Game time is set for 8AM.
