Cougars Too Much as Jills Drop Road Contest

Northland Women's Basketball continued their two week road trip to begin the new year on Friday afternoon with a conference matchup in Morris, Minnesota. The LumberJills dropped the contest to the Cougars 45-63.

The Northland College Women's Basketball traveled to the University of Minnesota-Morris on Friday afternoon for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference matchup. The LumberJills behind after the first quarter before dropping the contest 45-63 to the Cougars. 

Northland opened the scoring in the first with a jumper from Alex Espinoza. Following a pair of Cougar baskets Miranda Wagner hit a three pointer to pull back ahead. The two teams traded baskets on the ensuing possessions before Ashley Lopez hit a three of her own to pull Northland ahead by two. The cougars used a layup and a pair of free throws to end the period ahead 12-10.

The teams exchanged misses to open the second quarter before the Cougars were able to grow their lead to eight.  Kodie Remp's three with 2:47 left pulled the Jills within five. Morris used an "and-one" play following an Espinoza foul to again pull ahead by eight. Espinoza's steal and fast-break layup sent the team's to the lockerroom with the Cougars up by six.

The LumberJills shooting went cold in the third quarter. The Cougars held them to just 11.76% from the floor in the quarter to jump out to a 16 point lead. Remp's three with 7:58 remaining halted Morris' 8-0 run to begin the quarter. Unfortunately, the Jills would go nearly four minutes without scoring again until Bailey Wynn hit a pair of free throws. The Cougars were able to grow their lead to as many as 21 in the fourth quarter, ultimately finishing with the 18 point win.

Espinoza lead Northland with 14 points. Wagner finished with 13 and Remp with 11. Wynn pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Northland (5-7, 1-3 UMAC) will finish the weekend trip tomorrow with a game at Crown College. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
