Ashland, Wisconsin - The Northland College Women's Hockey team played game two of their first two-game series of the year on Saturday afternoon. Playing at St. Olaf University for the second day in a row the LumberJills were able to rebound from a 5-1 loss on Friday to earn the 2-2 tie. The contest was their second overtime contest of the early season.

The two teams began the evening with a very balanced first period. The LumberJills were able to fire seven shots in the opening stanza, after only attempting ten in the entire game the night before. The Oles maintained a slight advantage in the period with 12 shots, but it was the Jills who scored the only goal of the first period. Sydney Kanstrup scored her first goal of the season nearly seven minutes into the game. Taylor Richmond and Mahteya Dumelie tallied assists on the play. Sky Hughes, making her second start of the season in net, recorded 12 saves to send the Jills to the lockerroom with the 1-0 lead.

The Oles spent the first thirteen minutes of the second period firing shots on Hughes. The transfer goalie kept them off the board and gave her offense a chance to add to the lead. Northland's first shot of the second came from Richmond in the 14th minute. Kanstrup got the rebound and scored her second goal of the game. Richmond and Dumelie each picked up assists again, and the Jills were up by two. Unfortunately, the penalty woes that bit the Jills on the previous night showed up again in the final minutes of the period and the Oles capitalized with a power play goal at the 19:05 mark. Hughes recorded 16 more saves in the second and the Jills lead by one heading to the third.

Northland began the third period on the power play, but were unable to record a shot. Following the penalty kill the Oles' offense went to work trying to tie it up with relentless effort. But Hughes was up for the task, recording seventeen more saves in the third. It wasn't until another Northland penalty allowed St. Olaf to score a second power play goal to even the score with seven minutes to play. Hughes and company managed to survive the offensive pressure from the Oles and force overtime. The LumberJills opened the extra period on the power play. Kyleigh Moffatt got a shot on goal to open the period, but the Oles' goaltender was able to make the save. Moffatt got another shot off in the final minute that could have ended it, but again the shot was saved. Maddie Bloedel had her last chance shot blocked as time was expiring to end the game in a tie. Overall, Hughes finished with 48 saves.

"Today was a great response by our players," commented head coach Jason Carter. "We asked them to simplify their game, and they did just that. We did the little things well and capitalized on our opportunities."

The LumberJills (0-2-1, 0-0 WIAC) will return to the Bay Area Civic Center for the first time this season on Friday night. The home opener is scheduled for a 7:00 PM face off against UW-Eau Claire.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
