Box Score
The Northland College Women's Hockey team completed their first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference weekend series of the season on Saturday. The first half of the WIAC schedule has each team play multiple opponents per week in single game matchups. The home opening weekend pitted the LumberJills up against the conference's two highest ranked programs in the latest USCHO polls. Less than 24 hours after playing a hard-fought match with #8 UW-Eau Claire, the Jills hosted #6 UW-River Falls. The Falcons, who came into the game averaging four goals a game in the early season, were able to use their high-powered offense to get 76 shots on goal and win the game 8-0.
Sky Hughes was back in net for the LumberJills a day after recording 45 saves. Hughes day was very busy as she recorded 68 saves in the contest. The Northland freshman goalie was up to the task on the first 11 shots, keeping the game scoreless for the first eleven minutes. The Falcons were able to get the first goal on the board at the 11:11 mark and never looked back. Following the goal the LumberJills were able to show some offensive life. Kate Holtz, who is tied for the team lead in goals, fired a wide shot. Following a few more saves for Hughes,
Elle Black and Kyleigh Moffatt got shots on goal, but the Falcon goalie was able to save them. The Falcons were able to get on the board again with a minute left in the opening period to take the two goal lead into the break. The Falcons scored two more goals in the second period, which played out very similar to the first. The Falcons were able to grow their lead to seven with three more goals in the first seven minutes of the third. All seven goals to that point were scored even strength, with the Jills holding the Falcons scoreless on their lone power play opportunity in the second period. A late penalty in the third period, however, allowed the Falcons to score their eighth and final goal. The Jills finished with five shots in the contest.
The LumberJills (0-4-1, 0-2-0 WIAC) will play a single game next week, as they head back on the road Friday night for a WIAC contest at UW-Superior.
