The Northland College Women's Basketball team hit the road on Saturday for an afternoon contest at Finlandia University. The LumberJills weren't able to bounce back from a first quarter deficit, and dropped the game 48-76.

Finlandia University jumped out to the early lead in the first quarter, leading at the break 22-11. Alex Espinosa got the LumberJills on the board first, following a steal from Miranda Wagner. A 9-0 Lion run allowed them to get off to the fast start. A Wagner 3-pointer halted the run, but the Lions were able to push their lead to 11 several minutes later. Hayley Humphrey knocked down the 2-point jumper at the 2:50 mark to get the Jills back to a single digit deficit. Following a few Lion made baskets Wagner hit the buzzer-beater three to end the quarter down by ten. Humphrey picked up an assist on the final basket before the first intermission.

The two teams traded baskets for a majority of the second quarter until the Lions were able to use four straight possessions and seven unanswered points to grow their lead to seventeen. Bailey Wynn's free throw at the 2:59 mark started a streak of free throws to end the half for both teams. Following three straight from Finlandia their lead had grown to 19 at the half.

Kodie Remp hit a 3-pointer for the LumberJills at the 4:39 mark to slow down another Lions offensive run, and start one for the Jills. Remp, then, made a layup on the next possession and knocked down the ensuing free throw to complete the 3-point-play the old-fashioned way. Unfortunately, the Lions hit two three-pointers down the stretch and ended the half with a 24 point lead.

Rhonda Kole started the final quarter with a three-pointer for the LumberJills. After a few empty possessions it was Humphrey's turn from long range. Humphrey hit the next shot for the Jills as well. Remp and Wynn combined for four free throws in the final minutes, but the Lions would go on to win by the final 48-76 margin.

Wagner led Northland scorers with 14 points. Humphrey chipped in 11 and Espinosa added 9. Remp tallied 8 points and 7 boards off the bench for the Jills.

Northland (0-2, 0-0 UMAC) continues their four game road stretch to open the season next week. The LumberJills will travel to UW-Eau Claire on Friday before visiting UW-River Falls on Saturday.

Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
