The Northland Women's Volleyball team concluded the home portion of their UMAC schedule on Saturday in thrilling fashion. Playing North Central, a team that beat them earlier in the season, for the second time in two weeks the LumberJills defeated the Rams 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19 and 18-16.
The first two sets were back and forth for both teams, which would be a sign for things to come later. The first set was locked at 18 following a block from
Elizabeth Montgomery and
Bailey Wynn. The Rams would score the next two points to retake the lead, Wynn's kill halted the run and got the Jills back within one. Unfortunately, that is as close as they would get before the Rams took the first set. Set two played out very similar with both teams being knotted late at 17. A three point run, completed on Wynn's service ace, allowed the LumberJills to take control and even the match at a set a piece. The two teams traded sets again in sets three and four, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.Â
The LumberJills used a four point streak to build an early lead at 6-3. After trading the next few serves the Rams went on a three point run of their own to knot the set at 8-8. Trailing 15-14, with the match on the line,
Larissa Fossum's kill evened the match. The Rams retook the lead before Northland used two Ram attack errors and a
Shelby Justman kill to secure the match.
Overall, Fossum (17), Montgomery (16) and Justman (12) led the LumberJills in kills.
Rachel Callow added a stellar 48 assists, while Wynn (20), Fossum (17) and
Alexa Zadra (14) led in digs.
Northland (9-12, 4-8 UMAC) will play their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday against Finlandia Universiy. First serve in the Kendrigan Center is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, WI. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 14 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, Midwest Lacrosse Conference and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
