The Northland College Lumberjills fell to the Storm of Crown College 71-59 on Saturday in St. Bonifacius, MN. This UMAC contest was the tale of two very different halves. The Lumberjills and Storm traded baskets and the lead throughout the first quarter. After a put back from
Sarah Houle, NC went up 16-15 with a minute to go.
Bianca Avalos was fouled on the next possession for the Jills and hit both from the line with 30 seconds left in the quarter to put NC up 18-15.
The Jills offense began to click in the second quarter and they outscored the Storm 17-9. NC began to push the tempo of the game and attacked the Crown defense. The Jills also stepped up their defense as they forced 16 first half turnovers. Northland headed into the locker room with their largest lead of the game, 35-24.
Bailey Wynn had 8 first half points for the Jills while
Sarah Dunbar and
Bianca Avalos both chipped in 5 points.
Crown came out in the second half with a plan to go inside to their post players where they had the advantage. The Storm quickly cut into the NC lead as the Jills offense stalled. Crown had their first lead of the second half, 40-39 with 2:40 left in the third quarter. The Storm scored again inside and Avalos split a pair from the line to keep the Jills within two. The Jills had some trouble getting defensive stops and the Storm scored again. Wynn finally connected from long range with a 3-pointer, but Crown fired back with a bucket of their own to finish the quarter up 3, 46-43.
Crown did not relinquish the lead in the fourth quarter and the Storm battled hard for several offensive rebounds. NC continued to struggle offensively and had no answer for the post play from Crown. The Storm outscored the Jills 25-16 in the final quarter to come away with the win. Crown's Damonyka Roberts led the surge inside for the Storm and finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds, 14 of her points came in the second half.
Wynn, Avalos and
Miranda Wagner led the Jills with 11 points each. Dunbar scored 9 and
Autumn Ninke and
Sarah Houle chipped in 6 each.
