Cougars Run Past Jills

Morris, MN -

The Northland College LumberJills hung around early, but couldn't match the offensive firepower from the Cougars of the University of Minnesota Morris.  The Jills fell to the Cougars 89-59.  Lexus Eagle Chasing from Morris scored the first five points of the game, then Ashton Meadows  drove to the hoop and scored a left handed layup.  The score continued to go back and forth and a steal and layup from Emily Nielsen brought the score to 12-8 in favor of the Cougars.  After a few more easy buckets from the Cougars, Nielsen hit a baseline jumper for the Jills to bring the score to 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Mckayla Waggoner hit a jump shot to start the quarter and Morris quickly matched that bucket going up 20-15.  On the next possession for the Jills, Katie Taylor hit a 3 pointer to bring NC within 2.  After another bucket from Morris, Aja Gregg was fouled inside with 7:52 to go and she hit both free throws to again bring the Jills within 2, 22-20.  Once the Jills were forced to sub and make some adjustments, the Cougars brought on their offensive skills and went on a couple long runs when the Jills couldn't buy a bucket.  The 26 point quarter from the Cougars started to put the game out of reach for NC and Morris was up 44-27 at the break.

Nielsen hit another jumper from the baseline to score the first points of the second half, but Kendra Raths quickly answered with a 3 for the Cougars.  The Cougars continued to roll offensively while the Jills were stalled offensively.  Morris went on a few more runs to extend their lead to 69-39 after three quarters.

With it being the last game for the LumberJill seniors, Mckayla Waggoner, Ashton Meadows, Katie Taylor, Emily Howe and Emily Nielsen, the seniors saw a lot of action in the fourth quarter.  Meadows and Waggoner scored back to back buckets but the game was out of reach at that point for the Jills.  The final score was 89-59.

Waggoner led a very balanced scoring NC team with 10 points.  Meadows and Autumn Ninke had 8 points each.  Raths led Morris with 19 points and Elli Stevenson chipped in 18 for the Cougars.
