Although featured as a guard on the basketball squad, “Nep” proved to be exceedingly versatile, at various times handling every position on the team. During his captaincy he demonstrated unusual ability to think clearly under pressure. He was also a student manager of football.
Not confining his activities to sports, he was president of the student body, worked on the Wedge and Student Life staffs, and participated in drama.
Graduating in 1936, he furthered his education at the Universities of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Wyoming. During World War II he served with distinction in the U.S. Navy, as Lt. Commander in the Korean War, and later as Communications Officer. Making adult education the focal point of his professional career, he worked with the Wisconsin Employment Service in the area of counseling, research, and aid to the handicapped.
After settling in Appleton, Wisconsin, he devoted his life to adult vocational education implementing new techniques, developing courses, counseling with other communities, developing regional adult high school programs and editing a 12-page tabloid for five years. Milton Ness fulfilled the requirement of outstanding contributions to his country and to the communities in which he lived.
