Coach Ed Kernan had a most successful decade as the Lumberjack men's basketball coach. He came to Northland as a coach in 1955-56 and also coach Bayfield High School as well. For the next ten years Kernan was head basketball coach. In that time the team won 98 games. The team never placed lower than 3rd in the Badger-Gopher Conference. The best win-loss records were reached in the early '60s. During the 1960-61 season

and 1961-62 seasons the 'Jacks had a 19 home game winning streak.

Kernan taught in the Physical Education Department and became chairman. He also served as Athletic Director and Placement Director for Northland. Kernan was a graduate of the University of Minnesota where he played as a guard for the Golden Gophers. He received his Master's Degree in 1962 from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in guidance and counseling. He left Northland in 1965 and went to the University of Minnesota-Duluth as Placement Director. In 1966 he joined Price Waterhouse in Cleveland. On January 1, 1974 he moved to Chicago and accepted his present position of Administrative Director of Sidley & Austin.

He keeps busy with his family, golf and a summer place in Iron River, Wisconsin. This award is a small token to one of

Northland's most successful coaches.
