Grand Rapids, MI –
Freshman
Andrew Henderson scored a record six goals for the Northland College Men's Lacrosse Team, including five straight for the LumberJacks. However, the offensive outburst wasn't enough for the Jacks as they fell 21-10 to Calvin College on the road on Friday afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0 early on, Henderson would score the first goal of his record-breaking night off a beautiful pass from Andrew Stempin. Following another pair of Calvin goals, it was Henderson again finding the back of the net, this time off a pass from
Nick Anderson to cut the Northland deficit to 4-2. However, Calvin would score twice in the final 2:21 of the first quarter to take a 6-2 lead.
Calvin would come out firing to start the 2
nd, scoring three straight goals to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Henderson and the Jacks would do their best to stay with the Knights, pouring in three goals in the quarter, all by Henderson, with two assists coming from
Justin Roberts and one from
Kenny Gudmonson. The Jacks would head into halftime down 14-5.
A foul-goal outburst by the Knights to start the 3
rd quarter would all but put the game out-of-reach for Northland. To the Jacks wouldn't go quietly though, scoring 5 of 6 goals to close out the 3
rd quarter and open the 4
th. Three of those goals were scored by
Joseph Hofer, with another from Henderson and an additional goal by
Tron Trondson.
"It was a tough game today," said LumberJack Head Coach
Jack Meachum. "We are really starting to see where we need to improve to compete with more established lacrosse programs. They swarm to groundballs and capitalize on our mistakes. Those are things we need to do ourselves. There is a lot to build off of. It's great to see the offense clicking and when we had the ball we had some great looks. Our second half defense was very strong."
For the game, the Jacks were outshot 31-15, but the Jacks did manage to convert on 2 of 7 man-up advantages.
Northland hits the field again tomorrow, Saturday, March 18, as they head to another Michigan opponent in Alma College. Game time is set for 1:00pm.
Northland College is an NCAA Division III institution located in Ashland, Wisconsin. The LumberJacks and LumberJills sponsor 15 varsity sports and compete in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.
